Porcelain bowl with armorial-style decoration. China Ming dynasty, Wanli, 1600-1620. Jigdezhen. This bowl is decorated in underglaze blue with four armorial-style shields around the exterior. Within each shield is a fabulous seven-headed hydra (five reptilian and two human heads), with scaled wings, a tail, and two legs with hooves. The panels are a characteristic feature of kraak ware, a trade porcelain of the late Ming dynasty. Kraak ware was exported in very large quantities and derives its name from the Portuguese ships which brought the first such pieces to Europe. AC 1957,1216.19.
