La Tour de Constance (The Constance Tower). The Constance Tower (Tour de Constance) is a massive tower in the northern corner of the walls, separated from them by a moat filled with water and accessed by a bridge. It was built by Louis IX on the ruins of the old Matafere Tower of Charlemagne. Originally, it was meant to protect the town and the port, but later it became infamous as a state prison.
