The castle dates from the 13th century, when its castellan was the Cathar Bernard de Casnac. After the French Revolution of 1789, the neglected site was rapidly overgrown. The chateau became a stone quarry in 1832, when its stones were reused for the construction of a slipway for the riverside port. Today the restored chateau houses a museum of medieval warfare.
