Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669)
The Shell, dated 1650. Etching (state II), 97 mm x 132 mm. PD 1868,0822.672. The shell is a Conus marmoreus, which is native to south-east Africa, Polynesia and Hawaii. It may be that Rembrandt owned an example, along with many other curiosities in his collection.
