Grave stele of Marcus Aurelius Alexys. The inscription states that he was in the Spartan company of the Lakonians in the Parthian campaign of Emperor Caracalla in 214-217 CE. The relief depicts the soldier wearing a chiton, a cloack and the lorica segmentata, the corselet worn by Roman legionaries. On his head he wears a Lakonian pilos. The large club on the side is an unuasual weapon for this type of soldier. Marble. Imperial Roman, ca. 214-217 CE. From Sparta.
