The main altar with baldachin and the statue of Santa Maria Tonanzintla, Cholula, Puebla, Mexico. 17th CE. The goddess Tonantzin was the protector of maize for the locals before the arrival of the Spaniards. Her iconography was later fused with that of the Virgin Mary.
