Design for a paper-making machine, 1809. John Dickinson's cylinder paper-making machine, 1809. Dickinson’s machine was one of the first to produce paper in a continuous length rather than in single hand made sheets. It consisted of a hollow cylinder rotating in a vat of dilute wood pulp. This picked up fibres of the pulp, producing a reel of paper that could be pressed, dried and cut into sheets.
