Forces under Alaric I, King of the Visigoths from 395, sacking Rome, 410 (1654). Alaric (c370-410) ruled the Visigoths (western Goths) from 395. In 410, his army sacked Rome, an event regarded as marking the downfall of the Roman Empire in the west. From "Alaric ou Rome vaincue" ("Alaric or the Conquest of Rome") an heroic poem dedicated to Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) by Georges de Scudery. (Paris, 1654).
