Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
A battle scene; two figures. Ca. 1503-1504. Pen and brown ink, 18.6 x 18.3 cm. The two sketches (one nude, the other clothed) of a pensive standing man in profile are studies for an apostle, one of the twelve marble statues of the Apostles commissioned from Michelangelo in 1503 for the pier niches in Florence Cathedral - of which only the St Matthew was begun (and left unfinished). Drawn with the sheet turned ninety degrees is a battle scene, probably a preliminary idea for Michelangelo's projected, but unrealised, fresco, the Battle of Cascina. This was intended to complement Leonardo da Vinci's `Battle of Anghiari', commissioned to decorate the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The battle, in which the Florentine army defeated that of Pisa, took place in 1364. Inv. 1895.9.15.495.
