Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
A group of three nude men; the Virgin and Child. Ca. 1504-1505. Black chalk; pen and brown ink over leadpoint, 31.5 x 27.8 cm. This group of two nude men lifting up a lookout, is amongst the earliest surviving chalk drawings by Michelangelo. It is generally thought to be connected with his projected, but unrealised, fresco commemorating the Battle of Cascina. The Virgin and Child is a preliminary study for the 'Bruges Madonna'. Inv. 1859.6.25.564.
