The Epifania cartoon. 1550s. This cartoon was described, inaccurately, in a 1564 inventory as 'Epifania' and has retained this name. The subject is unknown, but the composition includes the Virgin and Child, a bearded St. Joseph and the infant St. John the Baptist with other unidentified figures. This cartoon consists of 26 sheets of paper glued together and was produced as a design for a painting by Michelangelo's biographer, Ascanio Condivi (c.1525-74), which is now in the Casa Buonarroti, Florence. It is one of only two surviving cartoons by Michelangelo. Black chalk, 232.7 x 165.6 cm. PD 1895, 0915.518.
