City walls of Carcassonne. These Gothic ramparts were built in 1240-1285 on 5th century Gallo-Roman walls. The commissioners were the Kings of France Louis IX, and Philippe III the Bold. In 1844 Viollet-le-Duc begun the restorations of the city walls.
