Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
Ideal head of a woman, c. 1525-8. Black chalk. 28.7 x 23.5 cm. She was traditionally known as the 'Marchesa di Pescara' but this identification is unlikely since Michelangelo's close friendship with the poet and religious reformer, Vittoria Colonna, whose title this was, came in the second half of the 1530s, after the portrait was executed.
