Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
(after). Ideal head of a warrior (count of Canossa), c. 1550-80. Black chalk. 41 x 26.3 cm. This drawing was long thought to be by Michelangelo but is now considered to be a copy after a lost original. The drawing has traditionally been known as the 'Count of Canossa' since the crest of the helmet in the form of a dog (cane) gnawing a bone (ossa) could be construed as a punning allusion to the name Canossa.
