Meridian Building and Great Equatorial Building, Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The Meridian Building was built in 1749-1855 and Great Equatorial Building in 1857. The dome of the latter was added in 1893 and damaged in the Second World War. The present dome dates from 1975. The Prime Meridian that goes through the Meridian building is the reference for GMT, an acronym for Greenwich Mean Time.
