Hourly drum beating, Drum Tower (Gu lou Dongdajie), Beijing. The tower was originally built in 1272 by Kublai Khan as the Tower of Orderly Administration (Qizhenglou). It was rebuilt in 1420 under the emperor Yongle (Young Lo) and restored in 1800. The drums inside the tower were beaten to mark the hours of the day.
