A woodblock print from Karakuri zui ('Illustrated Compendium of Clever Machines'), written by Hosokawa Honzô Yorinao. Published in Edo (Tokyo), Japan, Edo period, 1796. The 'tea-serving doll' (cha-hakobi ningyô) shown here is the most famous. The doll moved forwards towards the guest when a cup of tea was placed in his doll hands, waited respectfully while it was drunk and then turned around and trundled back with the empty cup. 22.5 x 15.9 cm. Inv. JA 1998.2-18.055 (JIB 932).
