Hall of Central Harmony (Zhong He Dian). Outer Court, Imperial Palace (Forbidden City), Beijing. This hall was originally built in 1420 with the name of Hall of Overwhelming Glory (Hua Gai Dian). In 1562 it was named Hall of Central Extremity (Zhong Ji Dian). It was rebuilt in 1627 and was given its present name in 1645. Here the Emperor rested before attending important ceremonies. Above the throne an inscription by Emperor Qianlong reads: Yun Zhi Jue Zhong (The Way of Heaven is profound and mysterious and the way of mankind is difficult. Only if we make a precise and unified plan and follow the doctrine of the mean, we can rule the country well).
