Purple wampum belt, Algonquian, northeastern North America, 18th cen. Woven belt of cylindrical beads; the two colours act as mnemomic devices commemorating agreements and events important in politics, history and religion. The design of three rectangles suggests an alliance of three groups in war, indicated by the use of purple which comes from the edge of the quahog clam.
