The Projecta Casket. Roman, ca. 380 CE. This casket is one of the most important and magnificent examples of late antique silver made in Rome. This side shows the goddess Venus on a cockleshell and Nereids riding a ketos and a hippocamp. The inscription suggests that the toilet casket was a marriage gift. It indicates further that the owner was a Christian woman. 54.9 x 27.9 cm. Inv. PY 1866,1229.1.
