The Scree-owl. Roman mosaic, late 3rd CE. 12x125 cm. Discovered in 1993 in a small bath near El Jem (ancient Thysdrus). Placed between two olive trees, the screech-owl is surrounded by dead thrushes. At the each end of the panel are emblems of a gladiator brotherhood: signs of the Telegenii (a crescent on top of a staff flanked by two vertical bars). Latin inscription: INVIDIA RUPUNTUR AVES NEQUE NOCTUA CURAT ("The birds break Jalousy and the Screech-owl takes care of it"). This formula was inteneded to deter bad luck.
