Marine Gods. Roman mosaic, 3rd CE. From Utica (north of Carthage). 860x750cm. Discovered in 1912 in the so-called house of Cato. At top Okeanos in an apse emerging from the waters and decorated with crab claws. Below the Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite on a chariot pulled by four sea horses. In register below, several representations of Venus recling on a boat surrouned by putti riding on peacocks and herons while hunting birds. Below ar nereids, tritons and sea monsters.
