Protective shield with the head of Medusa. Roman, 2nd CE. Marble, 120 x 150 cm. This relief "protected" the Arch of Antoninus Pius (r.138-161) which marked the Western gate of Leptis Magna. The goat skin of Amalthea was one of Minerva' (Athena's) attributes.
