Brancusi, Constantin (1876-1957) © ARS, NY
Bird in Space [L'Oiseau dans l'espace], black marble (1931-1936). Ca. 1936. In 1936, the Maharajah of Indore bought two versions of the "Bird in Space" ["L'Oiseau dans l'espace"}, one in black, one in white marble, to form an ensemble together with the bronze version (1927-1931) purchased previously, for the Temple of Meditation and Deliverance which was never realized. Brancusi photographed the two marble version prior to their departure in 1936. In this photograph the lighting transforms the Bird's beak, which is the only surface at an angle, into a halo of light while the rest of its body remains in the dark. Gelatin-silver print, 23.9 x 17.9 cm. Inv. PH507A. Copy photo: Georges Meguerditchian.
