Incense-burner. Sabaean, Yemen, Aden. 2nd-1st BCE. Cuboid incense burner with an ancient South Arabian inscription in Sabaic language carved on all four sides. Inscription Transliteration: rnd dhb ncm qst. Inscription Comment: Gives names of four different types of incense, a golden coloured gum, rud, (artemesia abyssinica) (Rhodokamakis), a benevolent gum (ncm, a sweet mild aroma (rhod), costus (qst) and an oderiferous root, dhb (a dark-hearted (as opposed to srf 'silver' > light hearted) plant (rhod). Carved and incised pink limestone, 9.5 x 10 x 10 cm. Inv. 1915,0710.6.
