Epiktetos (6th BCE)
Figure in oriental costume - trousers ('anaxyrides'), tight-fitting sleeved coat ('kandys') and soft skin hat ('kidaris') with long ear-flaps hanging down - fills the circular field of this plate. This outfit, which resembles the Median costume, was most commonly used in Athenian art for Scythians, but since the figure is not bearded, it is most likely in this case to be intended to depict an Amazon archer. Attica, ca. 520-510 BCE. From Vulci, Italy. Red-figured plate, diam. 19.5 cm. 1837,0609.59.
