Front cover of the Gospel of Lorsch (Evangeliary of Udalrich) with ivory plaques showing the crucifixion, the three women at the grave, and the ascension. Probably made in Franconia, 11th CE. The framing ornamental ivories are from the 12th or 13th centuries. This lavishly decorated Gospel lectionary belongs to a group of manuscripts in which is mentioned an Oudalricus peccator (Udalrich the sinner), who has been connected to Udalrich (d. 1075), abbot of the monastery of Lorsch, Germany. The precious binding is decorated with an ivory table on both front and back covers. Clm 23630.
