"Attack by cannon boats of the blockade ships before Charleston, 1861". The battle off Charleston Harbor, on January 31, 1863. The CSS Palmetto State slams into the Union blockader Mercedita. The gunboats Palmetto State, commanded by Captain Rutledge, and Chicora, Captain Tucker, accompanied by three small steamers all under command of Commodore Ingrham, made an attack on the blockaders, and succeeded in sinking two and crippling a third.
