Waldseemueller, Martin (c.1470-after 1522)
"Carta marina" [Maritime map], detail of Southern tip of Africa. Strasbourg, 1516 (facsimile). The Carta Marina could be considered the first printed nautical map of the entire world. In part because of the controversies surrounding his earlier naming of the Western Hemisphere "America" in his map of 1507, Waldseemüller omits the word from the Carta Marina, and indicates that North America is joined with Asia. Size: 119 x 63 cm. Inv. Kart. 4872.
