Mask of Jaguar or Tiger, used in tecuani dances. Mexico, Guerrero state, 20th CE. In the nahuatl language tecuani ("man-eater") designates a wild or dangerous animal dangereux. During dances fighting scenes between the peasants against the jaguar during the harvests are enacted. The jaguar is simultanously considered a dangerous animal and a symbol of fertility.
