Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von (1749-1832)
Liberty Tree. 1792. The inscription reads "Passans, cette terre est libre" ["Passers-by, this land is free"]. Hired by his patron, Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar, as campaign historian on revolutionary France, Goethe made this famous watercolor of a so-called liberty pole in the town of Schengen, which lies in the Mosel region at the border between the Duchy of Luxemburg and the French Republic. Presented by the Goethe to his friend Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (1743-1819) at Pempelfort. Watercolor, over pen and ink and pencil, on paper.
