Red slipped amphora from Faras, Sudan, Meroitic Period, 1st-2nd centuries. The decorative motifs are derived from those of Ptolemaic and early Roman Egypt, from about the third to the first century BC. Containers like this one from Faras in the Sudan were often placed in Meroitic graves to be used by the deceased in the Afterlife.
