A Battle between the Minamoto and Taira Clans, a 6-fold screen painting on paper (panels 4-6). Edo period, Kambun era, Japan, c1661-c1673. In the bottom left is a sea battle. On the right the crests of bamboo grass on the shields indicate the Minamoto clan. Six screens in total depict several crucial episodes in the war that was fought between the Minamoto (or Genji) clan and the Taira (or Heike) clan in the late twelfth century.
