Silver tetradrachm of Mithradates I, Parthian, from Iran, 171-138 BCE. Diam. 2.9cm, W: 15.4g. Inv. CM 1848,0803.22. - Like their Seleucid prototypes, the Parthian coins showed the profiled head of the king, in this case Mithradates I wearing a Hellenistic-Greek diadem on the obverse. The seated archer on the reverse resembles Apollo on Hellenistic coins but is dressed in the Iranian fashion. As all of the ruling Parthian dynasty took the name of an early king, Arsaces, this coin does not bear the name of Mithradates, instead the Greek legend reads 'Of the Great King Arsaces'.
