'Jingo-ji Temple Sutra', Japan, Heian period, mid 12th century. The handscroll records in gold Chinese characters between ruled silver lines the text of the Hachi dai-bosatsu mandara kyô ('Sûtra of the Mandala of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas'). The inside cover illustration in gold lines with gold and silver washes, depicts the historical Buddha, Shaka (Sanskrit: Shakyamuni) preaching at Vulture Peak, accompanied by a bodhisattva and monk on either side.
