Human figure (ki'i 'aumakua), Polynesian, (late 18th-early 19th CE?). This type of image is known in Hawaiian as ki'i 'aumakua and was probably used to invoke lesser gods for family or personal reasons. Such gods generally had a protective function, but could also be used for sorcery. The figure has human hair; the eyes are pearl-shell with seed pupils. Inv. ET Oc1944,02.716.
