Girdle prayer book. Tudor England, 1540-1545. Probably made by the Flemish goldsmith Hans von Antwerpen (John of Antwerp). Miniature prayer book with gold covers, originally worn on a girdle around the waist by ladies in the English court between around 1530 and 1560. The front cover depicts the biblical scene of 'The Brazen Serpent', the back 'The Judgement of Solomon'. Case: gold and enamel, 8.6 x 8 cm. Inv. PY 1894,0729.1.
