Vessel in shape of a dog with a mask. From Colima, Mexico. Before the arrival of the Spanish, this type of hairless dog was the only one known in Mesoamerica. Dogs were seen as guardians who accompanied the dead on their journey through the Underworld. Proto-Classic (300 BCE - 300 CE). Terracotta, 21.5 x 19.8 x 36.4 cm.
