Paradise of Shakyamuni, Tang dynasty, early 9th century. Shakyamuni sits between two bodhisattvas with his hands in the vitarka-mudra (gesture of preaching). A dancer and an orchestra perform before him. Another Buddhist assembly sits below them. Along both sides of the painting a sequence of episodes tells the story of Prince Siddhartha from the Baoen-jing, the 'Sutra of Requiting Blessings Received'.
