Mstislav Rostropovich, Russian conductor, Red Square, Moscow, Russia, 1993. Rostropovich (1927-2007) conducting the first orchestral concert ever performed in Red Square. He returned to Russia in 1990 after the fall of communism, having gone abroad into exile in 1974. The building in the background is the State Historical Museum, designed by Vladimir Osipovich Shervud and opened in 1894. Found in the collection of the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, Moscow.
