A French soldier back home from Madagascar, 1896. France invaded the independent island kingdom of Madagascar in 1895. By 1896 the island had been conquered and was annexed by France. 20 French troops were killed in action during the conflict, known as the Second Franco-Hova War while some 6000 died from malaria and other diseases.
