Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, Scotland, late 19th century. Artist: John L Stoddard
Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh, Scotland, late 19th century. The palace of Holyroodhouse served as the principal residence of the kings and queens of Scotland from the 15th century. The palace in its present form dates from the reign of Charles II who had it rebuuilt after it was destroyed by fire when Oliver Cromwell and his troops visited Edinburgh in 1650. Today the Queen uses Holyrood as her residence when on state visits to Scotland.
