Westminster Abbey, London, c1930s. Artist: Donald McLeish
Westminster Abbey, London, c1930s. A Benedictine monastery was founded on this site in the 7th or 8th century. Edward the Confessor (1003-1066) rebuilt an abbey on this site shortly before his death. William the Conqueror was crowned here on Christmas Day 1066, and it has been the setting for every English coronation since, except for those of Edward V and Edward VIII. The present building dates from 1245. A print from Countries of the World, edited by JA Hammerton, volume IV, The Fleetway House, c1930s.
