Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Stepney, London, 2002. Artist: EH/RCHME staff photographer
Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Stepney, London, 2002. The keep in the centre of the Tower of London is the original Norman fort built in 1077 under the orders of William the Conqueror. It was completed in 1100 and whitewashed in 1240, leading it be known as the White Tower from then on. Other parts of the Tower were added later. Each of its 4 turrets differs slightly. By the river is Traitors Gate, through which many prisoners saw their last glimpse of the outside world. The Tower is linked to many legends and reputed hauntings.
