Napoleon on a plate ready to be carved, 1814. Artist: Anon
Napoleon on a plate ready to be carved, 1814. A satire on Napoleon Bonaparte, who appears, skewered like a fowl, on a plate, bearing the City arms, alongside which lies a sword inscribed Blucher's carving Knife. This is a reference to Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher, a Prussian who defeated the French and captured 18,000 prisoners before entering Paris, aged 71. A man - possibly John Bull, the personification of England - frolics in a frothing tankard of ale. © The London Archives (City of London)/Heritage Images
