Botha was Commander-in-chief of the Boer forces from 1900 during the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902), leading a guerrilla campaign against the British. After the war he served as Prime Minister of Transvaal from 1907-1910, before being elected President of the Union of South Africa, an office he held until 1919.
