The last sledge from the trek back from the 'Great Southern Journey', Antarctica, 1909. A photograph from British explorer ErnestShackleton's (1874-1922) expedition of 1908-1909 on board the 'Nimrod'. He made three expeditions to the Antarctic, but is best known for the 'Endurance' expedition of 1914-1916 when the ship became trapped in the ice and Shackleton and five colleagues made an epic journey to South Georgia to seek rescue.
