George S Patton, American soldier, Fort Sheridan, Illinois, USA, 1910. Patton (1885-1945) was one of the most famous, colourful and controversial American generals of the Second World War. He graduated from West Point in 1909 and was commissioned as a cavalry officer. His first posting was to Fort Sheridan, a US Army base on the shores of Lake Michigan just north of Chicago. Patton is pictured here relaxing on the front porch of his quarters.
