Johan de Witt, 17th century Dutch statesman, (1836). De Witt (1625-1672) was the political leader of the United Provinces during the First and Second Anglo-Dutch Wars. He was deposed by the Orangist faction in 1672 and was later brutally killed, together with his brother Cornelis, by a mob.
