Rear Admiral John Dahlgren, United States Navy, 1862-1867. An ordnance officer who designed several naval guns, Dahlgren (1809-1870) was in charge of the Washington Navy Yard when the American Civil War broke out in 1861. In 1863 he was given command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and the following year assisted General Sherman in the capturing of Savannah, Georgia.
